Plant for recycling the glass from CRTs

The most sold plant of its kind in the Federal Republic of Germany

Mode of operation:

The CRT is divided into two pieces by a glow wire (stress cracking process): the screen section and the rear cone section. After the splitting operation, the fluorescent coating is removed from the screen section (vacuum cleaned). As a result two recycable grades of glass are recovered from the CRT.

Processed material:

Dismanteld and aerated CRTs without their clampingring.

Throughput:

We guarantee a minimum throughput of 30 large colour CRTs per hour with one member of staff. However, with good logistics 35 units per hour are easy to attain.

Size and features:

3.5 x 1 m² depositing area, additional units about 2 m², CRTs fed optionally from left/right/front, available as a mobile unit.

To be provided by customer:

2 electricity connections 380 V, 16 A slow fuse, opening in outside wall diameter approx. 250 mm.

Safety at work:

  • Protective hood, kept under a vacuum, above hood de-aeration unit about 2500 m³/h, with filter application category 51, de-aeration unit application category Kl.
  • Suction unit for fluorescent coating with the same filter specifications as the hood de-aeration unit.
  • Dust-free removal from the vacuum-cleaned fluorescent coating through disposable filter containers
  • Exhaust air emitted into atmosphere
  • All accessable components have low voltage
  • Elektric interlock when hoods opened

Permit:

When the order is placed, we provide on request the necessary documents for the permit.

Glass recycling:

On request we take back the CRT glass and return it to the glass industry or a nonferrous metal smelting works (against a small surcharge).

GWG is a consulting company for the planning and implementation of measures to recycle electric an electronic scrap.

Our range of services comprises:

  • Production and sale of our own plant for recycling CRTs
  • Permit planning
  • Operations planing and workshop facilities(independent of manufactures apart from our own plant!)
  • Temporary acceptance of cleaned CRT glass and/or the arrangement of recycling by a recycling company
  • Expertises and plant audits

All our sold plants are installed, approved and in service; the oldest one has been running for 5 years. Our cutomers include small companies as well as the market leaders. The total installed capacity can deal with the used TV tubes of 80 million people.

Proven technology - low capital expenditure - Minimum running costs

Purpose of facility:

The facility can be used for the serparation of dismantled picture-tubes of TV-sets and other screen facilities into two parts: The screen and the backward conus. This seperation serves for two purposes:

  • to clean front glass from polluting flourcent layer
  • to obtain two recycable glasses ( main substance of front glass: barium-oxyd, main substance of backward conus: lead-oxyd)
  • After the serperation, the two different glasses can be recycled to high-quality materials. The recycling of „mixed glass“ is ussally only possible at high sorting costs.

Proportion outline/ Operation of facility:

Facility is installed on table.

- standing space 2 squaremeter for typ single, 4 square meter for type double

- another 2 square meters for additional equipment (small compressor, ventilation device, suction device)

- power plug 380V/32 A slow fuse

- installation in closed room

- one operation person required, ventilated air (2,500 m³/h) should be extrected to outside.

Seperation of two glass parts and exposure of inside tube layer:

  • Opening of protective cover.
  • The dismantled, ventilated picture-tube, tension ring removed, is placed by hand under protective cover in facility, cathode facing up.
  • Mechanical height adjustment of tube (adjustment device under work table reaches up through table cutout).
  • A prepared wire is attached to the tube at the jointing seem between front and backward part of tube.
  • Closing of protective cover.
  • Automatic release of power supply when cover is closed. Mechanical release of low-voltage power supply to wire. The wire heats up (serveral hundered degrees below glowing temperature) and transfers heat the tube.
  • Due to different ability to expand of the and the backward glass, the tube gets under mechanical tension. Automatic shut-down of power supply (timelock) after 90 seconds and automatic short-term ventilation (5-8 seconds) of jointing seem. After shut down of heating process, the tube gets under thermic-mechanical tension and cracks up at the seem (cracking meachism).
  • As a result, you obtain two serparated parts and a clean dismantling line at the jointing
  • The above described process runs automatically when button is pressed by hand.
  • The opening of the protective cover shuts down the power supply of all electronic devices.
  • The backward part of the tube (facing up) can be removed manually from the box and stored in container. The exposed steel shadow-mask can then also be removed and stored in container. The inside layer of screen is now accessible and can be removed.

Removal of inside layer from front glass:

  • The screen is placed under second cover, which is accessible through a limited opening.
  • In the over, there is a brush tip with a connected suction device. Operation of suction device with brush tip which is kept under vacuum. Removal of fluouresentic layer, including the inside aluminium layer. As a result, the front glass looks as clean as „polished“.
  • With an automatic transmission measurement adjusted to a transmission of 53%.
  • Cleaning of brush over a grid which is kept under vacuum under ventilation cover.
  • After shut-down of suction device, the clean screen glass can be removed from the box and stored in a container. It can now be recycled to a high-quality substance.
